The war drama “Air Bridge” unfolds against the backdrop of the cathartic conclusion of World War II in Serbia. At its core is a remarkable feat—the largest single rescue mission of downed Allied airmen in aviation history, known as the “Halyard Mission.” This mission, conducted during the summer of 1944, was undertaken by the Serbian people under the leadership of the Yugoslav Army in the Fatherland, headed by General Draža Mihailović. Amidst profound despair from May to September 1944, the Serbian people, at great cost and sacrifice, rescued 508 American and other Allied airmen from certain death. These airmen were participating in bombing campaigns against Romanian oil fields, vital resources for Hitler’s army in Europe. Departing from the makeshift airfield in the Serbian village of Pranjani, these rescued airmen had taken off from Foggia, Italy, only to be shot down by the Germans over German-occupied Serbian territory.
